Township Duties Outlined
Trustee - Elected by the people
 Statutory Qualifications:
Qualified elector of Claridon Township
Resident of Claridon Township
Must give bond (O.R.C. 3.01)
Must take an oath of office (O.R.C. 503.27)
Preferable Qualifications: Willing to hold an office of trust for the people of Claridon Township.
Should possess a high level of personal integrity.
Should be dedicated to fulfilling the responsibilities of the office of Trustee.
Should be familiar with and capable of supervising appointed employees.
Should have a working knowledge of the budgetary process.
Should be well versed in the written and spoken word in order to communicate with constituents, other levels of government and private industry and commerce.
Composition and Term of Board of Trustee:
Three Trustees and one Fiscal Officer are each elected to four-year terms.
Mid-term vacancies are filled by appointment of a majority vote of the remaining Trustees or by appointment by the judge of the Geauga County Probate Court.
A Trustee's term begins on the first day of January following the election.
A Fiscal Officer's term begins on the first day of April following the election.  Two Trustees shall be elected on the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November every odd year, and one Trustee and clerk on alternate odd years.
 Meetings of the Claridon Township Trustees:
At the first meeting in January of each year, the Trustees shall designate when their regular meetings will be held throughout the coming year.
The Trustees can schedule special or emergency meetings whenever necessary to conduct special or emergency business.
 Regular and special meetings will be advertised with at least twenty-four hours notice to the public in a newspaper of general circulation in Claridon Township.
The Fiscal Officer will record minutes of all official meetings which are a permanent township record.
Cancellation of meetings will be posted on the bulletin board outside the Claridon Town Hall.
Typical Responsibilities and Duties:
Providing fire protection for the township
Providing for the maintenance and improvement of all township roads.
Acquiring, maintaining, and improving all township equipment, furnishings, buildings, land, and supplies.
Acquiring, maintaining, and improving township parks and cemeteries.
Adopting zoning resolutions for land within the township.
Making appointments to the Zoning Board and the Board of Zoning Appeals.
Screening and hiring township employees.
Enacting resolutions to support programs that will improve the quality of life in Claridon Township.
Planning, appropriating, and managing an annual township budget.
Placing tax issues and questions on the ballot for the consideration of the electorate.
Fiscal Officer - Elected by the people to serve a four year term starting in April with wages determined by the (O.R.C. 507.09).

Preferable Qualifications:
Willing to hold office of trust for people of Claridon Township.

Should be dedicated to fulfilling responsibilities of Fiscal Officer.

Should be knowledgeable of computers
Should have communication skills both verbal and written.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Keep accurate record of the proceedings of all trustee meetings and of all accounts and transactions including acceptance of bonds of officials of township (O. R. C. 507.04)
Responsible for maintaining financial statements including receipts and expenditures of township using the uniformed system of accounting.
Responsible for maintaining records of the roads, cemeteries and parks.
Keep records of the bonds of township officials.
Administer oaths and take and certify affidavits which pertain to township business including township officials.
Maintain township records in such manner that they can be made available to any member of the general public at a reasonable time during regular scheduled business hours.
Responsible for advertising regular and special meetings, posting vacancies and bid notices in a newspaper of general circulation in Claridon Township
Zoning Commission - Board consists of five members appointed by the Township Trustees to serve a term of five years.
High school education.
Qualifications: Reside in Claridon township.
High school education.
Appointed for five-year term by Township Trustees.
Knowledge of zoning preferable.
May be removed for non-performance of duty or misconduct in office.
Duties: Submit plan including text and maps to Trustees recommending the regulations of building and land use in Claridon Township. The plan should promote the public health, safety, and morals of the township and include such items as lot size, building size, set backs, uses of land and buildings. (O.R.C. 519.02) The Zoning Resolution, or plan, may be amended as needed. The Zoning Commission shall have open communication with the Trustees about zoning. The Zoning Commission will hold a public meeting to present zoning plan or change before submitting it of the Trustees. The Zoning Commission will meet one day a month and be paid a salary determined by the Trustees.
Board of Zoning Appeals - Board of consists of five members appointed by the Township Trustees to serve a term of five years. Qualifications: Reside in Claridon Township.
Appointed for five-year term by the Trustees.
Knowledge of zoning preferable.
May be removed for non-performance of duty or misconduct in office.
Duties: Hear and decide appeals where it is alleged there is error in any order, requirement, decision, or determination made by an administrative official in enforcing the Zoning Resolution. Authorize in specific cases a variance from terms of zoning resolution as will not be contrary to public interest, where, owing to special conditions, a 'literal enforcement of resolution will result in unnecessary hardship. (O. R. C. 519.14) Grant conditional zoning certificates for use of land, building or other structures as provided by zoning resolution. Revoke an authorized variance or conditional zoning certificate granted for extraction of minerals, if all conditions have not been met.
Meetings of the Board of Zoning Appeals shall be held at the call of the chairman. Salary will be determined by Trustees.
